On 8th March, 1918, the Germans launched an attack in an attempt to capture the high ground north-west of Gheluvelt in the Ypres salient. Holding the line here was 111 Brigade of 37th Division with 13th King’s Royal Rifle Corps and 13th Royal Fusiliers in front. These two battalions took the brunt of the attack during which their line was breached. 10th Royal Fusiliers were sent up and during the night of 8-9th March, launched three attacks which restored the situation. There were of course casualties for the three battalions involved and one of these was William Walker of 13th King’s Royal Rifle Corps who died from wounds on 10th March. |
